$500,000 facility upgrade for our Mitcham Tigers

An elected Liberal Nationals Government will contribute $500,000 to expand the new viewing facility planned for Walker Park. These funds come on top of the $3.45 million contributed by the Federal Liberal Government, the AFL and Whitehorse Council.

The Mitcham Football Club and the Mitcham Cricket Club are the oldest sporting clubs in the City of Whitehorse. For more than 100 years, these two great clubs have called Walker Park home.

Walker Park is now also home to the Mitcham EFL Netball Team, an increasing number of women’s and girl’s football and cricket teams as well as girls and boys Milo and Auskick clinics.

The clubs have outgrown their old and outdated facilities. Large clubs, like our Mitcham Tigers, need 21st century facilities to accommodate their growing membership and supporter base. This vital addition will enable sufficient capacity to host events and activities in view of all the on-field action.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Sport, Danny O’Brien:

“Victorians love their footy, but there’s nothing fair about Dan’s deal with the AFL when the facilities here at Walker Park are inadequate for large clubs, like the Mitcham Tigers.

Unlike Daniel Andrews who has decided to give the AFL a massive $225 million free kick to upgrade facilities at Etihad Stadium, the Liberal Nationals are getting behind our local sporting clubs.”

Comments attributable to Member for Ringwood, Dee Ryall:

“Large clubs like our Mitcham Tigers need 21st century facilities to accommodate the rapidly growing needs of modern grassroots sport and its expansion into women’s and girl’s football and cricket.

As a kid I played many sports including netball at Walker Park. I learnt so much from those experiences and that’s why I’m passionate about local sport and the benefits it brings to our young people and our community at large.”

Comments attributable to Mitcham Football Club President, Matt McCubbin:

“Dee has been a huge support to our entire club for many years. We are very thankful for the opportunity this expanded facility will deliver, enabling the club to grow into the future.”
