Positive Steps on Blackburn Road Caltex Site

Following a request that existing buildings on the former Caltex Service Station site on Blackburn Road, Blackburn be removed, I am pleased to announce some positive news.

Caltex have advised the EPA and the Minister for Environment and Climate Change, the Hon Ryan Smith MP, that the buildings will be removed once an electrical contractor has shut off power to the site.

I have been advised that this will happen in the next few days.

The EPA has also informed that Caltex will shortly commence construction and installation of remediation equipment and expects that this will be ready for operation in June of this year, with the contamination clean-up expected to take approximately three years. This timeframe is influenced by a number of factors including the extent of contamination and the practical difficulties in extracting the polluted groundwater.

I have been in frequent contact with Minister Smith to make sure that this issue is kept at the forefront, and am pleased to see that after 15 years of hard work by the traders and residents of Blackburn, we are finally seeing results.
